Hangzhou Signs $3.7B in AI Projects, Focuses on GPU Infrastructure Development
Hangzhou has committed to becoming a leading AI hub by signing 12 AI projects worth CNY 25.5 billion (US$3.71 billion). The summit emphasized developing computing infrastructure, particularly in AI inference GPUs through the Sunrise project. This aligns with China's broader multi-vendor AI chip strategy as local vendors aim to enhance AI computing capacity despite existing supply chain challenges.

Hangzhou signed 12 AI projects totaling CNY 25.5 billion (US$3.71 billion) during an AI development summit on February 28. Key among these is Sunrise's High-Performance GPU and Inference Chip R&D Project, aimed at supporting the city's AI computing infrastructure.
The initiative reflects a broader shift in China's AI strategy towards a multi-vendor chip landscape, with companies like Huawei and Cambricon involved in domestic chip production. Despite strong investment intent, concerns remain about execution speed and the verification of capabilities. Hangzhou's success in establishing itself as an AI hub depends on translating these projects into reliable, deployable systems.
