Hannover's Albus Autonomous Bus Project Nears Decision on Extension to 2027
The Albus project in Burgdorf has completed 1,200 test journeys, confirming the feasibility of autonomous public transport. Hannover's regional assembly will soon decide on extending the project and adding two more buses until 2027.

The Albus autonomous bus project in Burgdorf concluded its first phase with 1,200 test journeys and positive passenger feedback, demonstrating the feasibility of autonomous public transport. The Hannover regional assembly is expected to vote later this month on extending the project until 2027, which includes acquiring two additional Karsan e-ATAK electric buses operating at SAE Level 4 automation.
Launched in March 2023, the project received €6.3 million in funding, with 58% from the German federal government. The next phase aims for driver-out operations by 2029, enhancing passenger acceptance and evaluating CO₂ reduction potential. Continued operations beyond the project period are anticipated.
