The partnership aims to enhance shipbuilding capabilities through substantial investments in workforce and technology.

Hanwha Defense USA and Hanwha Philly Shipyard have won their first U.S. Navy subcontract under the Next Generation Logistics Ship Program, collaborating with Vard Marine US. This contract includes market surveys, concept design, manufacturing assessments, and production cost evaluations, reflecting a strategic move into the U.S. defense market.
Since acquiring the Philly Shipyard in December 2024, Hanwha has invested over $200 million to enhance its workforce and production capacity. The deal also allows for functional design planning and additional studies.
Hanwha Ocean, the parent company, is actively involved in MRO services for U.S. naval vessels, further solidifying its presence in the sector. This entry could reshape competitive dynamics within U.S. maritime defense manufacturing.
