Hapag-Lloyd and Kuehne+Nagel Launch Sustainable Shipping Initiative
Hapag-Lloyd and Kuehne+Nagel have initiated their first joint sustainable ocean freight project, targeting a reduction of nearly 3,000 tonnes of CO₂e emissions by 2026. This collaboration, utilizing Sustainable Marine Fuels, marks a significant step in the shipping industry's shift towards sustainability.
Kuehne+Nagel and Hapag-Lloyd's new agreement focuses on sustainable ocean shipping, using Sustainable Marine Fuels (SMF) to reduce emissions. The pilot initiative will cover approximately 3,300 TEU on the East Asia-North Europe trade route from April to December 2026, aiming to avoid about 2,979 tonnes of CO₂e emissions through the use of 1,000 tonnes of RED III-compliant waste-based biofuels.
This partnership employs a book-and-claim mechanism, enabling verified emission reductions for customers regardless of specific fuel use. Hapag-Lloyd has set a target for net-zero fleet operations by 2045, while Kuehne+Nagel aims for net-zero emissions by 2050, indicating a commitment to sustainable logistics and climate goals.
