Harlingen Mayor Addresses Misinformation on Potential Data Centers in Texas

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Harlingen Mayor Norma Sepulveda addressed concerns regarding misinformation about AI-generated information related to potential data centers in Willacy and Cameron County. She clarified that no data center has approached the city or the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation (EDC) for location within Harlingen.

There are no current projects before the City Commission, and it does not control private land transactions. An agreement exists with HWWS to potentially provide effluent water if a project moves forward, but this does not indicate any project is imminent.

Any proposal for a data center would be reviewed by the County Commission. Mayor Sepulveda stated that if a data center were proposed, she would advocate for a town hall meeting to inform the community. Concerns were raised by residents about local water and energy resources' capacity to support such a facility.
