Haskoning Acquires ViviMag Water Technology Patent from Kemira
Haskoning has secured the patent for ViviMag, a cutting-edge technology for phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge, developed with Kemira. This acquisition marks a significant advancement in sustainable water treatment, enabling water authorities to enhance resource recovery and reduce environmental impact.

Haskoning has finalized a patent transfer agreement with Kemira for the ViviMag technology, which focuses on recovering phosphate from sewage sludge. Developed through collaboration with Wetsus and Delft University of Technology, ViviMag utilizes magnets to extract phosphate as vivianite, thereby improving sustainability in wastewater treatment.
The first full-scale application will be at the Brabantse Delta water authority's plant in Breda. This technology not only aids in phosphorus recovery but also lowers iron levels in sludge, creating potential revenue streams for water authorities.
The interest in ViviMag spans various European countries, driven by regulatory pressures to reduce phosphorus levels in biosolids. Its retrofittable design can rapidly enhance existing treatment processes.
