Haydale Launches Research on Graphene for Lightning Protection in Aircraft
Haydale has secured a contract to explore graphene's applications for lightning protection in airliners, collaborating with BAE Systems and Airbus. This research aims to develop a cost-effective, highly conductive carbon fibre material to enhance safety in modern aircraft.

British company Haydale is initiating an 18-month project to investigate the use of graphene in carbon fibre to protect aircraft from lightning. The contract, supported by the National Technology Exploration Programme (NATEP), will explore the integration of graphene's conductive properties into aircraft structures, aiming to provide a solution that is both cheaper and faster to produce than existing methods.
Current practices include the addition of copper or aluminium meshes, which increase weight and costs. Haydale will receive funding of at least £100,000 for this project, alongside partners BAE Systems and Airbus, who are expected to benefit from the research findings. This initiative represents a significant step toward enhancing the safety of airliners.
