Health Crisis Linked to Sabi Star Lithium Mine in Buhera, Zimbabwe
The Sabi Star Lithium Mine in Buhera is causing significant health issues and environmental concerns for local residents. A petition to Parliament highlights rising health complaints, non-potable water, and negative impacts on livestock due to mining activities.

Health complaints among Buhera residents have surged due to the Sabi Star Lithium Mine, operated by Max Mind Investments. A petition from the Buhera Residents Network Trust reported frequent health issues, including chest pains and stomach ailments, with clinics seeing up to five pupils daily for these complaints.
The mine, which began operations in 2023, has also contaminated borehole water and endangered livestock, prompting community concerns over air quality and environmental damage. Local health workers alerted authorities, but little action has been taken. The Portfolio Committee on Environment, Climate and Wildlife is reviewing these issues and emphasizes the need for better communication between the mine and local stakeholders to address these pressing concerns.
