Heidekrautbahn Launches Hydrogen-Powered Trains in Berlin with Siemens and Ballard Technology
The Heidekrautbahn railway line north of Berlin has been revitalized to operate zero-emission passenger trains powered by Ballard fuel cells. The Mireo Plus H trains, developed by Siemens Mobility, began regular operations in December 2024, replacing diesel units on this non-electrified route.
The collaboration involves Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn (NEB) and several partners, aiming to set new standards in green mobility. The trains operate between Berlin-Karow and Groß Schönebeck/Wensickendorf, demonstrating a reduction of approximately 2,500 tons of CO2 emissions annually. Future plans include a new hydrogen facility in Wensickendorf by ENERTRAG, expected to produce 380 tons of green hydrogen annually by 2026, with 230 tons allocated for the Heidekrautbahn, enhancing its sustainability and potential for regional transport applications.
