HEX Project in Worcester, South Africa Marks First Utility-Scale Battery Storage Milestone
The HEX project, located near Worcester, South Africa, is the continent's first utility-scale battery energy storage system with a capacity of 100 MWh. It stores excess renewable energy during low demand periods and releases it during peak demand, stabilizing the grid and supporting local industries, particularly dairy and wine farms.
Implemented by Eskom and Hyosung Heavy Industries, the project received a $57.67 million investment from the Clean Technology Fund via the African Development Bank. It focuses on community development by employing local workers and fostering small businesses. The facility serves as a model for battery storage in Africa, with plans for Eskom Green to expand renewable projects.
