Hidroelectrica has finalized a €188.45 million contract for the modernization of the Râul Mare Retezat hydropower plant, with the objective to increase its capacity from 167.5 MW to at least 181 MW. This investment reflects a 2.6-fold increase over four years, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and environmental compliance.

Hidroelectrica has signed a €188.45 million contract for the renovation of the Râul Mare Retezat hydropower plant, awarded to a consortium led by Cobra Instalaciones y Servicios and Andritz Hydro GmbH. The project aims to enhance the plant's output from 167.5 MW to a minimum of 181 MW while optimizing operational costs and improving reliability.
Key upgrades include new Francis turbines, modernized generators, and enhanced SCADA integration. This effort is part of a broader investment strategy to modernize Romania's hydro infrastructure and boost energy security.
The previous bidding attempts faced challenges, with last year's process canceled due to non-compliant offers. The renovation aligns with national energy objectives and environmental standards.
