Hithium has finalized a €400 million investment agreement for a battery gigafactory in Spain, concluding two years of discussions with Spanish authorities. The factory's production capabilities, including whether it will manufacture battery cells or energy storage systems, have not been disclosed.
This investment reflects Spain's goal to enhance its position as a European clean energy hub, supported by abundant renewable resources and a robust industrial ecosystem. Other battery production projects include AESC's facility in Extremadura with a 30GWh annual capacity and a €4.1 billion joint venture by Stellantis and CATL in Zaragoza, aiming for 50GWh. Hithium, founded in 2019 in China, has been expanding its global footprint with supply agreements in Europe, highlighting the growing importance of the battery value chain in Spain's industrial strategy.
