HK Electric to Dismantle Lamma Island's Only Commercial Wind Turbine Due to End of Service Life
HK Electric plans to dismantle the sole commercial wind turbine on Lamma Island, citing the end of its 20-year design life in February 2026 and inability to source replacement parts. The turbine, operational since 2006, produced 16 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and saved approximately 13 million kilograms of carbon emissions. HK Electric aims for net-zero power generation by 2050, despite challenges in replacing the turbine.

HK Electric will dismantle the only commercial wind turbine on Lamma Island, reaching the end of its 20-year design life in February 2026. The Nordex N50 windmill, active since 2006, generated 16 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and reduced carbon emissions by 13 million kilograms.
The company cited the inability to find suitable replacement parts as a reason for decommissioning. HK Electric, which provides power using 68% natural gas and 32% coal, aims for net-zero power generation by 2050, with a focus on solar energy initiatives. Plans for an offshore wind farm near Lamma by 2027 remain.
