Hollister Faces Potential Fines for Wastewater Treatment Violations
Hollister may incur fines up to $5,000 per day for multiple violations related to its wastewater treatment facility. The Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board has identified issues including improper maintenance and inability to produce quality recycled water. Since June 2025, the San Benito County Water District has not received water due to quality failures, prompting a request for supply from the State Water Project. Estimated fines could reach $1.35 million if imposed from June 1.

Hollister is facing potential fines up to $5,000 per day for violations linked to its Domestic Water Reclamation Facility, as noted by the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board in a notice dated Feb. 20. Issues include failure to maintain the facility and allowing overflow.
The facility, designed to produce recycled water for Brigantino Park and agricultural use, has not met water quality standards since June 2025. Consequently, the San Benito County Water District requested water from the State Water Project. If fines are imposed from June 1, the city could owe $1.35 million for failing to provide quality recycled water, which is currently being discharged into percolating ponds.
