Honda and GM to Cease Fuel Cell Production at U.S. Joint Venture FCSM

FUEL CELLHYDROGEN

Honda and General Motors are phasing out fuel cell production at their U.S. joint venture, Fuel Cell System Manufacturing (FCSM), before the end of 2026. Established in January 2017, FCSM began series production in Brownstown, Michigan, in early 2024, but this phase will soon conclude.

The fuel cell systems produced were used in various applications including vehicles and power generation. Although Honda acknowledges positive outcomes from the venture, extensive discussions led to the decision to cease production.

GM's departure from fuel cell technology includes ending the development of next-generation hydrogen fuel cells under its Hydrotec brand by October 2025. Despite this setback, Honda aims to focus on its own next-generation fuel cell systems and expand its hydrogen business, identifying key applications in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, power plants, and construction machinery. Challenges persist as Honda scales back plans for a new production facility in Japan due to market changes.
