Honeywell Secures $45M for M1 Abrams Engine Modernization
Honeywell International's contract modification enhances the AGT1500 engine system for the M1 Abrams tanks, ensuring modernization through 2029. This upgrade focuses on the J8 digital electronic control unit, crucial for optimizing engine performance and efficiency.

Honeywell International received a contract modification valued at $45,033,279 to advance the AGT1500 propulsion system modernization for the M1 Abrams tanks. This modification raises the total contract value to $2,734,033,279 and includes the development of the J8 digital electronic control unit under the Total Integrated Engine Revitalization Program (TIGER), with completion expected by September 30, 2029.
The AGT1500 engine, a gas turbine system delivering 1,500 horsepower, has been in service since the 1980s and supports the tank's performance, speed, and maneuverability. Modernizing the engine control system is essential as it enhances acceleration, reliability, and maintenance predictability, especially as tanks are equipped with added armor and electronic systems that demand more power.
