Nigeria Urged to Enhance Gas Sector for Industrial Growth
Gas engineer Lolade Olamide calls for investment in Nigeria's LNG sector to boost industrialisation and job creation. He emphasizes the need for strong governance and infrastructure to avoid pitfalls experienced in the oil sector.

Lolade Olamide, a gas engineer, advocates for Nigeria to utilize its over 200 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves to enhance industrialisation and job creation. He highlights that LNG capacity is currently at 22 million tonnes annually, indicating a significant gap in governance and infrastructure necessary for broad-based development.
Olamide proposes that LNG projects should anchor industrial clusters rather than operate as isolated export facilities, drawing on examples from Qatar and South Korea. He suggests an industrial corridor from Calabar to Lagos, supported by the West African Gas Pipeline and other transport infrastructure.
Seven governance priorities have been identified, including transparency, workforce development, and community participation. A governance framework of at least ten years is essential for sustainable industrialisation. Olamide envisions Nigeria targeting 80 million tonnes of LNG capacity by 2040 alongside the establishment of multiple industrial hubs and enhanced technical workforce development.
