Hong Kong to Launch EV Battery Recycling Facility by 2026
Hong Kong will begin operations of its first large-scale electric vehicle battery recycling facility in June 2026, addressing the increasing waste from decommissioned batteries. The Environmental Protection Department forecasts a rise in decommissioned battery waste from 1,300 metric tons in 2026 to 6,700 metric tons by 2030.

In June 2026, Hong Kong's inaugural large-scale facility for recycling decommissioned electric vehicle batteries will start production. The facility aims to convert waste power batteries into regenerated black mass, contributing to sustainable waste management.
The Environmental Protection Department projects that the volume of decommissioned electric vehicle batteries will rise significantly, with estimates reaching 6,700 metric tons by 2030. The local producer responsibility scheme is expected to generate around 66 million Hong Kong dollars annually and create over 100 full-time jobs in the recycling sector.
Currently, five licensed enterprises in Hong Kong are authorized to dispose of automotive lithium batteries. This initiative may enhance local recycling capabilities and stimulate economic growth.
