Huawei's Scientist Warns of Physical Limits in Chip Manufacturing
Huawei's top semiconductor expert cautions that Western chipmakers like Nvidia may soon encounter physical constraints in processor development. Liao Heng highlighted Huawei's alternative strategies, including the Tau Scaling Law, to innovate in chip design amid geopolitical tensions and sanctions affecting supply chains.

Liao Heng, Huawei's leading semiconductor scientist, stated that Western companies, particularly Nvidia, are approaching physical limits in chip scaling. He emphasized the need for alternative strategies, such as Huawei's Tau Scaling Law, which focuses on enhancing transmission speeds instead of solely miniaturizing chips.
Scheduled for release, Huawei's first smartphone chip utilizing this approach, called LogicFolding, aims to demonstrate this new design philosophy. The bifurcation of global semiconductor advancements between the US and China poses risks, necessitating each side to develop self-sufficient manufacturing capabilities. Liao's insights reflect a broader trend of China's push toward semiconductor independence amid increasing sanctions and geopolitical strife.
