Hungary Certifies First Renewable Hydrogen Production Facility
Hungary's MEKH has certified its first renewable hydrogen plant, operated by MFGT, enhancing transparency in green energy production.

The Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH) has certified Magyar Földgáztároló's Kardoskút facility as the country's inaugural renewable hydrogen production site. This certification is a response to EU regulations aimed at ensuring energy source transparency and tracking.
The plant employs water electrolysis and proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology to produce hydrogen, with its output verified through official guarantees of origin. MEKH has also upgraded its IT systems to facilitate the registration of renewable gases, which supports increasing renewable energy's contribution to Hungary's energy mix. This certification could enhance market confidence in green fuels, but may also present challenges for compliance and verification as the sector scales up.
