Huntsville Utilities to Install Tesla Battery for Off-Peak Power Storage by 2026

ENERGY STORAGE

Huntsville Utilities has taken delivery of an 83,000-pound grid-scale battery from Tesla to enhance reliability by storing electricity during off-peak hours. This pilot project aims to manage peak electric demand, reduce transformer load, and provide limited outage support.

The battery will be added to the Huntsville Utilities Stringfield Substation to support demand during extreme weather conditions and improve overall electrical infrastructure. This initiative is part of a broader movement among utilities to explore energy storage solutions to strengthen the grid amid rising energy demands and extreme weather events. The project received a $125,000 grant from the American Public Power Association and is set to be installed in 2026, with future plans for additional storage batteries contingent on the project's evaluation.
