Hurley Republican Committee Opposes Terra-Gen's 250-MW Battery Storage Project in Ulster

ENERGY STORAGE

The Hurley Republican Committee voted on January 21 to formally oppose Terra-Gen's proposed 250-megawatt lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System at 430 Hurley Avenue, located on the former John A. Coleman Catholic High School site in Ulster.

The committee's resolution, released Wednesday, highlighted concerns about the facility's proximity to dense residential neighborhoods and the potential evacuation zone for thousands in case of an emergency. Concerns included fire safety, the challenges of rapid evacuation, toxic smoke from possible battery fires, noise from cooling equipment, and the risk of contaminated runoff affecting groundwater and the Lower Esopus Creek. This opposition aligns with a broader debate within local boards and follows a recent moratorium by the Hurley Town Board on large-scale battery storage facilities, reflecting increasing community resistance to the project.
