Hybrid Data/Detention Facility Planned in New Jersey for AI Support and Cost Savings
Construction of a hybrid data/detention center in Randolph, NJ, is set to begin on April 1, aiming for energy self-sufficiency. The facility will leverage detainee-generated power for AI operations, presenting a new model in facility management.

The hybrid data/detention facility in Randolph, New Jersey, will transform a 470,000-square-foot warehouse into a self-sufficient center. Construction is scheduled to start on April 1, integrating a large AI data center operated by Planeteer and a 1,500-bed detention center under the U.S.
Internal Control and Enforcement agency. Detainees will power the data center by using generator-equipped exercise equipment for 8-10 hours daily. This innovative model, inspired by a similar project in Los Angeles, aims to mitigate local government concerns over infrastructure strains and power generation. The design includes secure pods with independent facilities for the detainees, optimizing energy use while addressing housing and operational challenges.
