Hydro Power Plants Provide 45% of Nigeria's Electricity Amid Gas Supply Crisis

HYDRO POWER

From February 1 to 21, four hydro plants and one steam plant generated an average of 2,022.3 MW, accounting for 45% of Nigeria's total electricity supply of 4,497.3 MW. Kainji led with 546.3 MW, followed by Egbin with 494.9 MW and Jebba with 424.7 MW.

Gas supply shortages have led to ongoing load shedding, prompting electricity distribution companies to warn customers of intermittent outages. The Association of Power Generation Companies reported that the federal government owes N6.5 trillion, raising concerns over liquidity and operational sustainability in the sector, with projected debts potentially reaching N8.8 trillion by December.
