Hydrogen-Powered Shunting Locomotive Launched by Sierra Northern Railway in California
Sierra Northern Railway has launched a hydrogen-powered shunting locomotive at its West Sacramento facility, transitioning from diesel to hydrogen fuel cells supported by a $4 million grant from the California Energy Commission. The project, which aims to develop four hydrogen battery locomotives by 2026 with an additional $19.5 million in funding, focuses on improving operational efficiency and reducing carbon emissions, setting a scalable model for the U.S. railroad industry.

Sierra Northern Railway launched a hydrogen-powered shunting locomotive at its West Sacramento facility, transitioning from diesel to hydrogen fuel cells with a 500 kWh battery bank. Funded by a $4 million grant from the California Energy Commission in 2021 and an additional $19.5 million in 2023, the project aims to develop four hydrogen battery locomotives by 2026.
The integration of hydrogen and battery technologies improves operational efficiency and reduces carbon emissions, serving as a scalable model for the U.S. railroad industry. This initiative emphasizes energy efficiency, financial sustainability, and adherence to safety protocols, contributing positively to air quality.
