Hydrostor Advances Willow Rock Project; Hawaiian Electric to Build Waena BESS in Maui; Peregrine Partners with Wärtsilä for Texas Storage
Hydrostor is seeking amendments to its Willow Rock project agreement, requesting a price change and a delay, with the project now expected to be shovel-ready by 2026. Hawaiian Electric is set to begin construction on the 40MW Waena Battery Energy Storage System in January 2024, supporting renewable energy initiatives, while Peregrine Energy Solutions and Wärtsilä are advancing the Mallard Energy Storage project in Texas, which will enhance the state's electric reliability.

Hydrostor is amending its 200MW/1,600MWh power purchase agreement for the Willow Rock project with Central Coast Community Energy, requesting a price change and a 13-month delay. The project, which has faced design reevaluations, is now expected to be shovel-ready in 2026 following final permitting approval.
Meanwhile, Hawaiian Electric will begin construction of the 40MW/160MWh Waena Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in January 2024, aimed at supporting renewable energy goals by 2045. The project, approved by the public utilities commission, will connect to the Waena Switchyard and aid in phasing out the Kahului Power Plant. In Texas, Peregrine Energy Solutions and Wärtsilä are progressing on the 250MW/500MWh Mallard Energy Storage project near Dallas, which will utilize Wärtsilä's Quantum2 technology and aims to enhance the Electric Reliability Council of Texas system.
