HyMetBat Project Develops New Analytical Methods for Sustainable Batteries Under EU Green Deal
The EU-funded HyMetBat project, running until 2028, aims to advance sustainable battery technology by developing reliable characterization methods. Led by Empa, the project focuses on understanding the relationship between battery materials, synthesis, processing, and performance.
Using radiation-based analytical methods and electroanalytical techniques, researchers will analyze batteries in operation to monitor changes in their electrochemical and mechanical properties during charging cycles. The consortium includes over 30 partners from universities, research institutions, and industry, coordinated by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Berlin. This initiative supports the EU's European Green Deal and Switzerland's goal of climate neutrality by 2050.
