Ib Vogt Proposes 30MW Solar Farm Near Hawick Amid Community Opposition

ENERGY STORAGEPOWER GRIDS & TRANSMISSION

Ib Vogt has submitted a Section 36 consent application to the Scottish Government for a 30 megawatt solar farm near Hawick, which will include a 30MW battery energy storage system (BESS) and a substation. The BESS aims to stabilize the grid and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.

However, local concerns are rising regarding the project's visibility from the A7 and its impact on the Borders Abbeys Way tourist route. Objections focus on potential wildlife disruption, noise, fire risk, and the lack of economic benefits.

Councillor Watson McAteer has formally opposed the project, citing its proximity to Hawick. If approved, construction is expected to begin by 2027, aiming to generate electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of 8,600 UK homes. The project will also include wildlife habitat creation and a £12,000 annual community benefit fund for 40 years.
