Iberdrola España has launched Spain's first large-scale battery energy storage systems in Alarcón, Cuenca, integrating them with Romeral and Olmedilla photovoltaic plants. The Romeral and Olmedilla batteries provide a combined capacity of 120 MWh and can supply zero-emissions electricity for up to two hours to over 13,000 homes, enhancing grid stability.

The project created more than 100 jobs and involved national suppliers, including Jema. The hybrid generation model optimizes existing infrastructure while minimizing environmental impact. The Romeral and Olmedilla plants generate electricity equivalent to over 54,500 homes and avoid more than 33,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. The battery systems are part of a portfolio of six recognized Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation, receiving €37.5 million in funding.
