Idaho Expands Nuclear Energy Initiatives with New Task Force and Federal Funding Bill
Idaho leaders are advancing nuclear energy initiatives due to rising power demands from AI and data centers. The Advanced Nuclear Energy Task Force, established in 2022, aims to enhance nuclear growth. Senator Jim Risch introduced the bipartisan Accelerating Reliable Capacity Act, proposing $3.6 billion in federal funding for new reactors and a federal insurance program for cost overruns. The Idaho National Laboratory is developing new reactor technologies, including small modular reactors and microreactors, to meet future energy demands.

The Idaho National Laboratory is developing small modular reactors and microreactors, with plans for the first small modular reactor to go online next year. INL also focuses on recycling spent fuel and testing advanced reactor technologies.
