IEA Reports Strong Growth in Low-Emissions Hydrogen Production Despite Challenges
The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that low-emissions hydrogen production is set to grow from less than 1% today to approximately 4% by 2030, driven by policy actions. Key regions, including China, Europe, India, and North America, are responsible for nearly 90% of committed production. Challenges such as high costs, regulatory complexities, and demand uncertainty persist, impacting project realization.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) indicates that low-emissions hydrogen production will increase from under 1% of total production to about 4% by 2030. This growth is contingent on policy actions addressing cost disparities with fossil fuel hydrogen and stimulating demand in sectors like refining and chemicals.
China, Europe, India, and North America will contribute to nearly 90% of production commitments. Despite a project pipeline potentially exceeding 15 million tonnes, challenges such as high costs, complex regulations, and demand uncertainty remain significant barriers to development.
