IHK Advocates for Increased Data Center Space in Frankfurt to Boost Digital Economy
The Frankfurt Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) is advocating for increased data center space in the city to enhance its digital economy and maintain its status as a European digital capital. IHK President Ulrich Caspar criticized the current restrictive data center concept, suggesting that these facilities could aid energy supply and climate protection, while the Left party has proposed a moratorium due to concerns over energy consumption. A recent study highlights that existing data centers, while occupying significant space, have limited local employment and tax contributions.

The Frankfurt Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) is calling for more space for data centers in Frankfurt to maintain its leadership in digital technologies and strengthen its position as a European digital capital. IHK President Ulrich Caspar criticizes the city's current data center concept, which limits construction, as investment-restrictive.
He argues that data centers could contribute to energy supply and climate protection through waste heat in new development areas. Meanwhile, the Left party in Frankfurt has proposed a moratorium on new data center establishments due to high energy consumption.
A study indicates that Frankfurt does not benefit significantly from the existing data centers, which occupy large areas but employ few people and contribute minimally to local tax revenues. The IHK emphasizes the indirect value creation and the role of data centers in innovation and digital transformation.
