IMF Highlights Guyana's LCDS for Climate Resilience and Energy Transition
The IMF reports that Guyana's Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 enhances climate resilience and supports energy transition. The Gas-to-Energy project is set to reduce fuel-based electricity reliance by 2027, while renewable energy initiatives are expanding nationwide.

Guyana's Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 is pivotal in enhancing climate resilience and facilitating a transition to sustainable energy, according to the IMF. The Gas-to-Energy project is anticipated to decrease dependence on fuel-based electricity by 2027, contributing to lower energy costs and improved competitiveness.
Concurrently, the installation of 50 megawatts of solar capacity by year-end and the operation of hydropower plants in Lethem have significantly boosted renewable energy usage. Indigenous communities will receive GY$2.5 billion in LCDS funding this year, raising total allocations to nearly GY$17 billion.
Decisions on fund usage are made by Village Councils to ensure community involvement. These initiatives integrate macroeconomic stability and disaster resilience into Guyana's growth strategy.
