India Advances World’s First Integrated OTEC-Desalination Plant in Lakshadweep

NOVEL RENEWABLE ENERGYWATER INFRASTRUCTURE & DESALINATION

India is constructing the world's first integrated Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) project in Kavaratti, Lakshadweep, overseen by the National Institute of Ocean Technology. The facility utilizes the temperature difference between warm surface seawater and cold deep-sea water to generate about 60-65 kW of renewable energy, which powers a desalination plant, producing 100,000 to 150,000 liters of potable water daily.

This initiative aims to tackle freshwater shortages and lessen dependence on diesel-powered systems. The project faces logistical challenges due to the region's seabed conditions and aims to provide a stable water supply while promoting sustainable development under the Blue Economy framework.
