India Allocates ₹7.85 Lakh Crore for Defence Modernisation in 2026-27 Budget
The Indian government has allocated ₹7.85 lakh crore to the Ministry of Defence for the 2026-27 fiscal year, marking a 15.19% increase from the previous year. This budget represents 14.67% of total Central Government expenditure, with a significant increase in funding for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Key initiatives include advanced technology acquisition, increased private sector participation in nuclear energy, and the launch of the Research Development Innovation initiative to enhance R&D funding.

The budget emphasizes advanced platforms and technologies, and the SHANTI Bill aims to modernize nuclear laws and encourage private sector participation in nuclear power. The government has initiated the ₹1 lakh crore RDI initiative to boost research and innovation and is advancing the India Semiconductor Mission with a focus on cutting-edge technologies. Missions for rare earths and critical minerals have been launched to reduce import dependency.
