India and UK Collaborate on Offshore Wind Taskforce Amidst Lack of Progress
India has no offshore wind turbines despite its extensive coastline and ambitious renewable energy goals. A new taskforce, created with UK collaboration, aims to advance offshore wind development, but challenges remain.

India aims to establish 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 as part of its broader goal of 500 GW from non-fossil sources. Despite its considerable coastline and ambitious renewable energy targets, India has yet to install any offshore wind turbines.
A recently launched taskforce with the UK seeks to develop necessary supply chains and financing models. However, previous attempts, such as viability gap funding of 74.5 billion rupees in 2024, have not resulted in active projects, due to design flaws and market conditions.
Concerns persist regarding the attractiveness of India's tender structure for international investors and the feasibility of offshore wind amidst competitive solar alternatives. The taskforce's effectiveness in translating policy into actionable projects remains uncertain.
