India and UK Launch Offshore Wind Taskforce for Clean Energy Development

WIND ENERGY

India and the UK launched the India-UK Offshore Wind Taskforce to provide strategic leadership for India's offshore wind energy sector. This initiative is part of the India-UK Vision 2035 and focuses on developing the offshore wind ecosystem through ecosystem planning, supply chain development, and financing.

The taskforce aims to address execution challenges and ensure measurable progress. India has identified offshore wind zones off Gujarat and Tamil Nadu and has introduced a Viability Gap Funding scheme with a budget of Rs 7,453 crore (about £710 million) to support initial projects.

India’s installed non-fossil fuel capacity exceeds 272 GW, including 141 GW from solar and 55 GW from wind. The offshore wind sector is expected to contribute to India’s clean energy transition and enhance energy security.
