India's Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has outlined a comprehensive strategy to modernize the nation's infrastructure, aiming for global standards while emphasizing environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness. The plans include the construction of access-controlled green highways, ropeways, and tunnels to facilitate improved connectivity between urban centers, which is expected to significantly lower logistics costs and enhance the competitiveness of Indian products.

According to a joint study by IIM Bangalore, IIT Madras, and IIT Kanpur, India has successfully reduced its logistics costs from 16% to 10% of GDP, primarily due to the development of high-quality road networks. This figure remains higher than China's 8% and is comparable to approximately 12% in the US and Europe. Gadkari is optimistic that these costs could further decrease to around 9% by December, yielding substantial economic benefits.

In the public transport sector, the ministry has awarded Tata Motors the first tender for flash-charging buses, with a pilot scheme set in Nagpur. This initiative promises a 30% reduction in travel costs compared to diesel, while maintaining a service quality akin to air travel. Additionally, the government is exploring innovative mass transit options, including a hyperloop system between Delhi and Gurgaon.

Addressing the significant Rs 22 lakh crore fossil fuel import bill, Gadkari emphasized the promotion of hydrogen, biofuels, and alternative fuels to reduce reliance on imports, with aspirations to transform India into an energy-exporting nation, despite existing infrastructure challenges.

The automobile sector, currently valued at Rs 22 lakh crore and ranked as the third-largest globally, is projected to become the largest within five years, driven by advancements in electric and flex engines. Gadkari reiterated the importance of aligning infrastructure development with environmental goals, utilizing eco-friendly materials such as bamboo for crash barriers and recycling municipal waste in construction.
