India Fast-Tracks Sawalkot Hydroelectric Project on Chenab River Post-Indus Waters Treaty Suspension
The Indian government has expedited the Sawalkot Hydroelectric Project on the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir, following the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. NHPC has issued a Rs 5,129 crore tender for the project, which aims to generate 1,856 MW. The project includes two phases and is expected to take about nine years for completion, contributing significantly to the region's energy security amid ongoing tensions.

India has fast-tracked the Sawalkot Hydroelectric Project on the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir after suspending the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) issued a Rs 5,129 crore tender for a project generating 1,856 MW.
The project consists of two phases: Phase 1 will generate 1,406 MW, while Phase 2 will add 450 MW. Construction is projected to span approximately nine years. Bids open on March 12 and close on March 20, with a 3,285-day timeline for completion. The project aims to enhance energy security and economic growth in the region.
