India Mandates Alternative Fuel Facilities at Fuel Outlets
The Indian government requires retail fuel outlets to offer alternative fuel options, aiming to enhance energy security and reduce pollution. This policy, effective within three years, addresses financial pressures on dealers and encourages private investment in cleaner fuel solutions.

The Indian government has mandated that every third retail outlet (RO) must provide alternative fuel options, such as CNG, LNG, biofuels, or EV charging facilities, within three years of commissioning. Entities must report on the status of ROs established since November 8, 2019, and rectify any shortfalls within six months, facing penalties of 10 lakh INR per deficient outlet.
This policy aims to curb pollution, reduce reliance on imported crude, and promote energy security. Additionally, new retail fuel marketers must establish at least 100 ROs within five years, including 5% in remote areas. The government will review compliance every three years, following a recent policy revision to align with decarbonization and electric mobility goals.
