India Pursues Power Grid Links with Sri Lanka to Enhance Cross-Border Energy Trade
India is exploring power transmission links with Sri Lanka to boost cross-border electricity trade, according to Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. This initiative is part of the 'One Sun, One Grid, One World' vision, aimed at facilitating clean energy flow and strengthening regional energy cooperation. India already supplies electricity to Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, and plans to include Sri Lanka soon. The country has a peak electricity demand of approximately 250 GW and is preparing to meet increased requirements, projecting a need for an additional 30 GW due to emerging demand drivers.

India is exploring power transmission links with Sri Lanka to enhance cross-border electricity trade, as stated by Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. This initiative aligns with the 'One Sun, One Grid, One World' program aimed at facilitating the flow of clean energy.
India currently supplies electricity to Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan and plans to extend this to Sri Lanka shortly. The country's peak electricity demand reached around 250 GW in 2024, with preparations to meet up to 270 GW during peak periods.
Emerging demand from data centers and electric vehicles is expected to require an additional 30 GW. India targets 100 GW of energy storage capacity by 2035 to stabilize the grid and support renewable energy integration.
