India Surpasses France and Canada as Fourth Largest Clean Electricity Generator in 2025
India's clean electricity generation reached 27% of total output in 2025, with solar and wind contributing 14%. This marks a significant shift in the power sector, as all new electricity demand was met by clean sources, driving coal generation down by 2.9%.

In 2025, India became the fourth largest generator of clean electricity, overtaking France and Canada, with clean sources comprising 27% of total generation. Solar power contributed 9.4% to India's electricity demand, while fossil fuels maintained a 73% share, making the sector the largest emissions contributor.
By December 2025, India had installed 258 GW of renewable capacity, aiming for 500 GW by 2030, with projections suggesting renewables could reach 42% of generation. Despite significant solar capacity growth, challenges exist in transmission infrastructure and grid flexibility. Additionally, India's position as the second-largest coal producer raises concerns about methane emissions without enhanced policy measures.
