India Targets 5 Million Metric Tonnes Green Hydrogen by 2030 Amid Challenges
India aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, leveraging its National Green Hydrogen Mission. However, high production costs, infrastructure needs, and policy changes pose significant challenges to realizing this goal.

India's National Green Hydrogen Mission has a target of 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen production by 2030, with an initial budget of Rs 19,700 crore. The mission aims to cut dependence on fossil fuels, reduce CO2 emissions by 50 million metric tonnes, and create approximately 600,000 jobs while attracting $100 billion in investments.
However, the high cost of electrolysers, which are critical for hydrogen production, remains a major barrier, as India currently lacks large-scale electrolyser manufacturing. Experts indicate that achieving the green hydrogen target will require 60-100 GW of electrolyser capacity and 125 GW of renewable energy.
Additionally, India plans to earmark 70% of its green hydrogen production for export and 30% for domestic use. Despite the potential for a first-mover advantage, demand creation and infrastructure development will be crucial for success.
