India's electric mobility initiative aims to deploy 72,000 fast chargers as part of the PM E-Drive scheme, supported by ₹2,000 crore from the government. Proposals have come from states like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
The Centre emphasizes customer affordability and flexible implementation methods. With over 9,000 fast-charging stations funded previously, 6,000 are operational. Under the FAME scheme, 5,500 of 7,000 sanctioned electric buses are now operational.
The Union Budget 2026-27 also supports lithium-ion cell production and allocated 4,000 electric buses to poorer states. The EV sector currently offers about 300,000 direct jobs, with potential growth as investments increase.
