India Unveils Semiconductor Roadmap to Produce 7nm Chips by 2030 at WEF 2026
India's Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled a semiconductor roadmap at the World Economic Forum, aiming to produce 7-nanometer chips by 2030 and advance to 3-nanometer technology by 2032. The initiative, backed by a $70 billion investment, will establish four semiconductor plants by 2026, creating 2.5 million jobs and focusing on manufacturing to meet 75% of global chip demand. Collaboration with IBM and support for 24 startups will enhance technology and talent development in the sector.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced India's semiconductor roadmap at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21, 2026. The plan includes producing 7-nanometer chips by 2030 and progressing to 3-nanometer technology by 2032, starting with 28nm-90nm manufacturing to meet 75% of global chip demand.
India's initial focus is on this segment, crucial for sectors like electric vehicles and consumer electronics. Four semiconductor plants are set to begin production in 2026, supporting 25 lakh jobs. The roadmap is supported by a $70 billion investment in AI infrastructure, with an additional $50 billion anticipated soon.
Collaboration with IBM aims to enhance chip technology and develop talent, with 24 startups in the semiconductor design space. Vaishnaw emphasized a phased approach to manufacturing, underscoring India's commitment to becoming a top-five global semiconductor player.
