Indian Railways Unveils First Hydrogen-Powered Train on July 17, 2023
Indian Railways is set to launch its inaugural hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant advancement in sustainable transport. This initiative aligns with India's goal of becoming a Net Zero Carbon Emitter by 2030, transitioning from traditional energy sources to cleaner technologies.

On July 17, 2023, Indian Railways will introduce its first hydrogen fuel cell-powered train, enhancing its commitment to sustainability. This train, operational on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat route, features onboard electricity generation via a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell, producing only water vapour as a byproduct.
The project includes a dedicated hydrogen ecosystem at Jind, capable of storing nearly 3,000 kg of hydrogen. Overall, Indian Railways aims to achieve Net Zero by 2030, focusing on electrification and exploring hydrogen technologies to reduce diesel dependency. The successful implementation of this hydrogen initiative could set a precedent for clean transport solutions in India and beyond.
