India's Copper Refining Capacity Needs Surge to 500,000 Tonnes Every Five Years
India's demand for refined copper is projected to increase by 500,000 tonnes every five years, driven by economic growth and infrastructure needs. Despite some capacity increases, domestic production will remain inadequate to meet this demand, requiring further investments in refining and smelting facilities.

India's refined copper demand is projected to grow 9.3% to 1,878 kilo tonnes (KT) in FY25, necessitating an additional 500,000 tonnes of refining capacity every five years. Current expansions, including a 100,000-tonne increase from Hindustan Copper and Hindalco, will be insufficient against the total demand of approximately 1.8 million tonnes.
While domestic cathode availability is expected to improve with new projects from Hindalco and Kutch Copper, it will not close the supply gap. Continuous investment in refining and smelting facilities is critical to address the forecasted shortfall in production.
