India's Energy Transition: Focus Shifts from Fuel to Grid Security
India is projected to require over 61,000 circuit kilometers of additional inter-state transmission capacity by 2029-30 to support its expanding renewable energy sector. The shift in focus from fuel security to grid security is crucial for integrating renewable energy effectively into the national grid, allowing for reliable electricity delivery amid ongoing global energy disruptions.

India's renewable energy expansion has necessitated a significant increase in transmission infrastructure, with estimates indicating a need for over 61,000 circuit kilometers by 2029-30. Approximately 50 GW of renewable capacity is currently stranded due to transmission bottlenecks.
The government’s new initiatives, such as Viability Gap Funding for energy storage, aim to facilitate the integration of solar and wind power into a stable grid. Notably, nearly half of India's installed power capacity now comes from non-fossil sources, with a target of 500 GW by 2030. Experts stress that grid security is essential for energy independence, as it ensures reliable power delivery from renewable sources, especially as households increasingly adopt solar technology.
