India's Energy Transition: Green Hydrogen and Carbon Markets as Key Drivers, Says Former MNRE Secretary
Green hydrogen is essential for India's decarbonization, especially for hard-to-abate sectors, according to Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, former Secretary of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy. He emphasized the need for demand aggregation, pilot deployments, and targeted support to unlock its potential. The focus should shift from policy-driven to market-driven solutions, with well-designed carbon markets playing a critical role. Other officials highlighted the importance of efficient energy use, renewable energy sources, and state-level implementation to accelerate the energy transition.

Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, former Secretary of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in India, stated that green hydrogen will be crucial for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors such as steel and transport. He highlighted the need for demand aggregation, pilot deployments, and targeted viability gap support to maximize its potential.
Bhalla advocated for a shift from policy-driven to market-driven decarbonization, emphasizing the role of carbon markets in mobilizing private investment. Other officials, including Abhay Bakre from the National Green Hydrogen Mission, noted the importance of aligning energy supply with economic growth and highlighted the necessity of cooperation between states and the central government for effective policy implementation.
