India's Geothermal Resources: 11,000 GW Potential for Energy Generation
A report highlights India's geothermal capacity, estimating 11,000 GW for industrial heat, over 1,500 GW for cooling, and 450 GW for electricity. The development could create up to 700,000 jobs and enhance energy security amid rising demands.

India's geothermal potential includes over 11,000 GW for industrial heat, 1,500 GW for cooling applications, and 450 GW for electricity generation, as reported by Project InnerSpace in collaboration with the Council on Energy, Environment and Water. Geothermal development could generate between 350,000 and 700,000 jobs while supporting economic growth in agriculture.
Despite past limitations in deployment due to exploration risks and policy challenges, advancements in drilling technologies and the National Policy on Geothermal Energy improve prospects for large-scale implementation. States like Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra have been identified as key areas for geothermal energy development. Partial deployment could ease pressure on the power grid and enhance energy security.
